We are having a destination wedding in St Thomas, and a reception at home a little later. For the reception, we are having a clam bake at an outdoor grove, but I would like to carry on the beach theme. I'm interested in centerpiece ideas! I really don't want flowers, as this is a really casual event, and candles are out, I think because it will be 2-7 pm in the summer...anyone have any creative ideas? I'm looking ofr something elegant, yet casual...nothing cartoonish. Our colors are sand and a pale turquoise...thankss for any help!
I'm looking for ideas for centerpieces.?
I second the "no fish" sentiment. Fish are animals, not decorations.
I LOVE the fruit idea, and I also think candles would be gorgeous as well, even if it is the day time. Will you be having seating in a pavillion? If so, votive candles in pretty holders would be great, especially if it's shaded under the pavillion.

I love this idea with the sand, plants and shells. The sand is contained, so it's not too messy and these would be super simple to put together.

A large bowl of shells:

I loved this idea, but it was too casual for our more formal reception:

This is a good article:

Reply:You can still use candles, citronella ones to keep the bugs away. They have real decorative ones now, and some don't smell bad either.
You could throw glitter onto the table, or confetti. Place a bowl in the center with water in it and decorative glass pebbles on the bottom and put some floating candles. You don't have to light the candles, that way whatever shape floating candles you put in the bowl, won't melt and still look pretty at the end of the night.
Reply:You can get some pretty shells and beach glass at a craft store to arrange around the table, and put up some mini polynesian tiki torches. I got some cute ones that were really inexpensive at www.orientaltradingcompany.com
I would advise against doing anything with sand (too messy) or the goldfish (dead goldfish are NOT attractive centerpieces!)
Reply:Goldfish or a Betta in a fish bowl w/ flowers around it.
Oh and Starfish and decorative coral.
Reply:We are having a casual outdoor wedding so we decided to go with fruit centerpieces. Our colors are orange, red, and yellow so we are putting oranges, lemons, and cherries into wide vases on the tables along with a few candles. If its a beach theme maybe you could use some local fruit like pineapples or something like that.
Reply:im having lanterns with a candle inside...oh and i saw ikea had lanterns for like 3.99 each...really cute silver ones. you can place them on top of rose petals or have flowers around them
Reply:huge, oversized margarita glasses, glued un-refined sugar (to look like salt) around the top. then fill them with water, tint yellow to look like a margarita and then float3 little candles inside. To top off the look, add candy limes to the rim of the glass and add an oversized straw!
Reply:I would get photo frames and put picture of the two of you at diffrent time. Your guest could also take them home as a momento. Snapfish is cheap for pix. You could even write your names and your wedding date. Good luck!
Reply:I did the centerpieces for my sisters wedding and they turned out really cute. I got small bowls from Wal-mart and put a fish in each with some blue colored rocks on the bottom. Then I put the bowl in sand. I put the sand in a clear container so it would not be a huge mess. I got the clear, round plastic container that you put under a flower pot to catch the water that runs out the bottom. I put a few small shells and starfish in the sand. I used a big shell to write the table number on. I stuck it in the sand standing up. I put all that on a square piece of fabric matching the color of the rock. I got so many compliments!
If you don't want to use a fish outdoors, you could do a floating candle instead. I got battery operated floating candles for my wedding. That way you don't have to worry about them going out.
Reply:I did a beach themed centerpiece once with a glass vase(very simple %26amp; cylindrical), put colored or plain sand in it about 1/3 to 1/2 full. Put shells in the sand. Take Bamboo poles and paint them whatever color you like(the pale turquoise would be nice or white), and put two to three in the vase for height. It looks great!
