Ideas Please?

Hello,



My Partner and I are starting to plan our wedding. We don't want the huge scale thing everyone else seems to want. We will only have family and close friends at the wedding in my mum's local church. However we will be inviting all our friends to the reception.

I've asked my mum and my step dad to give me away. ( I see my step dad as my dad) My step dad is a scot and i'm planning on wearing his family tartan sash(Robertson this is mainly green and blue with a hint of red). However instead of across me i want to have it incorporated into my dress and wear it round my waist to cross at the back and down to the bottom of the dress.



Now i Just need some more ideas....Where to look for a dress, What flowers i should look at, Theme for the reception and for the groom, grooms men and bridesmaids(my little sister who is 21 will be my bridesmaid and she's already being fussy about what she wears she wants to choose it and the colour)

If your sister is your only bridesmaid then let her choose her dress just give her the color scheme for the wedding and tell her to pick one of those colors. Are you using the Robertson plaid as your wedding colors? Why not have a Scottish theme for your reception. You could name the tables for the various counties in Scotland. You could incorporate the plaid colors in most things at the wedding and the reception. The guys could wear deep blue tuxes with green vests or maybe find the tartan plaid vests for them to wear. Is your step father going to wear his kilt?



I would look at your favorite flowers for your bouquet and probably roses for hers. I would pick a flower out of your bouquet for your groom and pick a flower out of your sister's for your fiance's groomsman.



If you want to incorporate the tartan into your wedding dress then I would start contacting dress makers because you are probably going to have to have one custom made to your design specifications. Don't flip out. If it's a simple design, a lot of times you can have the dress made for a lot less than buying one off the rack and you'll get exactly what you want including the fabric you want the dress made out of.
Reply:You don't have to do a "Scottish theme" wedding--just work the colors of the sash into your color scheme. You don't state what month you are getting married in. Your bridesmaids could wear midnight blue and carry flowers that pick up the sash-- Flowers depend on the season--you can do Gerbera daisies in summer, dahlias %26amp; mums in fall, garden roses in winter...Select your colors and bring the sash in to the florist--they will help you. Your sister will settle down once you have settled on your colors--try to go with a neutral that she could possibly wear again--and let her have input on the style. You could even select the fabric and color and let your bridesmaid wear different styles that suit them.

As for your sister, she should gracefully go with what you chose as it's YOUR wedding. She can decide when the time comes how she wants her wedding without any unasked for interference from you.

Reply:well, honey the great thing about getting married is that this is YOUR big day, not your sisters. If you want her to wear a hot pink dress with camo. print tea party hat, she has to! :) I got engaged in october and the first thing I did was go to the grovery store and buy a ton of bridal magazines. Go to martha stewart weddings.com, the knot.com, getmarried.com. These are some of the best sources for ideas that I have found. Go to davids bridal.com and see whats available for dresses. If you dont go with davids, you can find the same dresses at other places too. pick a theme. Make it seasonal, beach theme, something that defines you as a person. If you and your man have something you enjoy together....like picnics, have a picnic theme...or whatever. if you are wearing a tartan, you can have your guys in kilts and your ladies in pretty dresses to match the style. Choose your colors and go from there for the dresses. choose flowers that stick with your theme or season. I am having an october wedding, I picked red and white and fall flowers with pumpkins. go to rexcraft.com to see what invites might strike you. if you dont want a big wedding, thats cool. You can still have a small church wedding with a bigger reception. I am having a 100 people at the ceremony and 200 at the reception. to save money, use silk flowers instead of hiring a florist. Go to craft store floral sales, you can get them 50% off!! Good luck, it will be beautiful. Just remember, this is for you and your guy, so you two plan and dont let anyone crowd your space. Oh, also buy a wedding planner, it will save your stress big time! Check out borders or barnes and noble for wedding planning books!

the easiest starting point would be to choose a base colour. either pick up a colour from the tartan (because green and blue are pretty), choose a complimentary colour, or incorperate a lighter or darker shade of one of the colours in the tartan.

Use this colour guide to pick dresses for your bridesmades, or to keep them happier, give them the colour and tell them to buy/have it designed themselves. but make sure they check with you. they arent allowed to try and upstage you on your wedding!

A colour scheme, even if you dont follow it strictly will help you pick flowers, decorations for the reception. stationary and even the cake.

for example, you decide on a navy blue from the tartan, have the bridemades in a lighter shade of blue, tablecloths or napkins in your navy, and white flowers with thistles, heather and tiny blue forget-me-nots.

everything else you can do in monochrome to highlight your colour (ie white place settings, candles, centre peices etc)

the men could have tartan waistcoats to match the tartan on your dress.

your sister has to understand that it is your special day and that you will accept her idea's but it is ultimately your decision.
